There seems to be a few similarities between the characteristics of the pirates and the Gedes. I know this may seem far fetched, but...
When Gede is in possession, whats is one of the items it is said he likes, glasses, usually with one eye out?
How the food offering usually prepared? Bu-ca-ne, the plaintain, and fish, are peppered, roasted by fire...
Gede is said to be lawless, and usually shows up at anytime during a service. Well so is the story behind the pirates, they are said to be lawless, love women, and drink. And what about the wooden leg, what does Gede referred his baton too? Just some food for thought.

About 1630, some Frenchmen who were driven away from the island of Hispaniola fled to nearby Tortuga. The Spaniards tried to drive them out of Tortuga, but the buccaneers were joined by many other French, Dutch and English and turned to piracy against Spanish shipping, generally using small craft to attack galleons in the vicinity of the Windward Passage. Finally they became so strong that they even sailed to the mainland of Spanish America and sacked cities.
English settlers occupying Jamaica began to spread the name buccaneers with the meaning of pirates...
Last week I mentioned Pirates of the Caribbean, if you haven't, take look at it again....
